The cerebral nuggets of goal setting (3)
By Bayo Ogunmupe
Nugget 15: As in everything in life, action is essential in goal setting. Whatsoever thou resolves to do, do it immediately. Reserve not to the evening what the morning can accomplish. Do not wait for time will never be "just right." Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools at your command. Better tools will be found as go along. Never put till tomorrow what you can do today. There is never a better time than right now to do whatever you wish to do. This is the Anglo-American Civilisation led by the United States of America. America won the space race by landing a man on the moon and bring him back to the earth alive. America did not gain its freedom by waiting for the right time, they gained it by revolution. So, neither should you wait for the right time to secure your financial freedom. Start today to make a better life for yourself and your loved ones.
Sixteen: In goal setting failure isn't an option. Don't allow roadblocks stop you in achieving your goals, go around, over, or under; surely you will find a way. By deciding from the beginning that failure isn't an option, you set yourself up for success. By imagining how wonderful your life will be at the achievement of your goal, you make your success inevitable. Regardless of the difficulties, you must never quit trying to reach your goal. !7: Stay positive against all vicissitudes, for life's ups and downs provide windows of opportunity to determine your values and goals. Use all obstacles as stepping stones to build the life you want. Recognise that every setback and obstacle is an opportunity for improvement and learning.
Eighteen: Always reward yourself with a celebration whenever progress is made. It isn't just the end goal we celebrate. But each and every milestone you complete along the way are successes within themselves. It is important you reward yourself at least once a week for a goal well pursued. Not only do you get to see the fruits of your labour by doing this; but by taking the time to relax you become more effective and excited about life. The reward you're giving yourself don't have to be anything tangible, you can be taking time off work, taking a walk around the park, or enjoying a luxurious bubble bath. The possibilities are endless and deciding on how to reward yourself is half the fun. 19: Every month stand guard and evaluate your progress. Even if you fail, you should evaluate what you have tried, see where you derailed, see what you've done wrong, modify your method of attack and try again. Win or lose it is the journey you are on that is important; which is why you should reflect back on your journey. Ask yourself what you did right and what you could have done better.
By honestly answering those questions you've asked, you would advance further ahead on your next goal than you were on your previous one. Thereafter, you begin to find that each new goal you set will become easier and easier to achieve until it becomes almost effortless triumph at every goal you propose. Finally 20: The kernel of cerebral goal setting is your readiness to make changes at any point of the journey to greatness. According to the greatest genius of all time, Albert Einstein: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Thus, after self evaluation, it's time to make changes. Sometimes these changes are small adjustments, other times it could be painful ones. But if you desire to keep progressing and live a more fulfilling life, changes must be made constantly. The great psychologist Carl Jung once said: "I am not what happens to me, I choose who I become." In life's final analysis you choose who you become through painstakingly pursuing a goal or not having any goal at all.
When an athlete runs a triathlon, his goal is to beat his opponents and win. When a person engages in an intense workout, there is a weight goal he would like to meet. When you apply for a job, your goal is to pass the interview and get employed. So, it is important to set a goal for yourself so that you can meet a particular objective. Without goals you are nothing in life. This is why goal setting is important. When dealing with your career, your finances or your personal life, setting yourself goals will allow you create an action plan so that you can work towards meeting those goals.
