Nigerian scientist makes case against sugar

By Bayo Ogunmupe A Nigerian scientist, Professor Bamidele Salau of the Department of Biochemistry, Redeemer's University, Ede, Osun State has submitted that there is a bitterness in sugar which camouflages as sweetness and that sucrose which is its component is a poison. And since no poison is safe, it should be treated as such. This discovery was disclosed by the professor of Biochemistry at the sixth inaugural lecture of Redeemer's University (RUN). Professor Salau explained that his research showed that some of the world's dangerous diseases like diabetes mellitus, metabolic disorder, hypertension and many more displayed high fructose, high sucrose and fatty diets which induce metabolic disorders. The researcher added that sugar has been implicated in the causation of metabolic syndrome which is a scaffold for the development of cancer and other cardiovascular diseases including diabetes mellitus. He posited that sugar as a dietary factor has been implicated as the cause of many cancers. He averred that more than 10 types of cancers have been found to have strong links with sugar consumption. Currently, Professor Salau is the head of Department of Biochemistry at RUN.
